Even if you already speak Spanish, you may want to take a couple of classes to learn about the regional use of ‘vos’, Argentinismos and a bit of Lunfardo, the unique slang used extensively throughout the country.

Public Schools

• Laboratorio de Idiomas, Universidad de Buenos Aires

The University of Buenos Aires Language Laboratory is an obvious option for very inexpensive and high quality Spanish classes. Here you get a feeling for what its like to be a university student in Argentina — classes are excellent and the bar is set high, but inscription is a bit chaotic, the classrooms have paint falling off the walls, it’s a miracle if the bathrooms have toilet paper and you’ll be in charge of making your own photocopies of the course material.

Regular courses begin in March and August every year. Classes cost US$500 for four hours of instruction per week for one semester. Their ‘super-intensive’ one-month courses with 15 hours of instruction per week are a little more expensive at a cost of about US$575. The university can also provide a certificate confirming that you passed either the basic, intermediate or advance Spanish to provide for school or work.

For those with advanced Spanish they also offer excellent courses in Spanish for foreigners including, ‘Spanish through Cinema,’ ‘Literature of the Rio Plate,’ ‘Culture and Conversation’ and ‘Immigrants in Buenos Aires.’

<a

It functions as a secondary school and provides adult education.

They offer two-month courses with eight hours of instruction per week or four-month courses with four hours of instruction per week. These courses are great for those who speak well enough to get around, but want to keep improving at a steady pace. They also offer more advanced classes than the University of Buenos Aires, which only goes up to ‘level seven’ Spanish.

Their Spanish classes, taught by ex-University of Buenos Aires professors, tend to be slightly less expensive than the university. As with many state institutes, the professors are excellent but the administrative department, in our experience, is a disaster.

<a

Additionally private schools tend to offer a smaller class size for more personalized instruction, extracurricular activities, and comforts such as comfy chairs and classrooms with heat and air conditioning.

• Expanish

<a

The school is ideally located downtown in an historic UNESCO World Heritage building.

Expanish offers an intensive Spanish course of 20 hours per week, an intensive Spanish Plus class, which combines group classes with one-on-one instruction for a total of 30 hours per week and tailor made one-on-one classes. Other courses include Spanish and Tango and Business Spanish. Class size is small, with a maximum of nine students per class.

Additionally the school has a student lounge, a study room and library, free wifi throughout the building and is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Extra curricular activities include film screenings, city tours, workshops and group excursions. A big bonus is that as of summer 2011 the school will have a rooftop terrace with awesome views and a cafeteria to get something to eat and hang out between classes.

The school can also arrange homestays with an Argentine family or a room in shared apartment as well as volunteer opportunities that will allow you to improve your language skills and help out the community.

Expanish is accredited by The Association of Language Centers (SEA) and follows a curriculum set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF).

<a

For smaller deliveries, a AR$20 surcharge applies. Outside of regular delivery times, orders can be placed online or by calling the sommelier’s cell number, and deliveries arranged accordingly.

The 0800 wine cellar is generally closed to the public, except for tasting events, although purchases can be made there by prior arrangement. Serious connoisseurs can even hire space in the cellar to store premium wine. Film director and part-time resident of Buenos Aires, Francis Ford Coppola counts on owner, Nigel Tollerman as his personal sommelier in Argentina and also uses the cellar to store his local collection.

Malbec is leading the way amongst the reds and the Torrontés as a distinctive, fresh, aromatic, and economically-priced white. Malbec is developing a deserved reputation as a concentrated, full-bodied wine with complex dark spicy fruit, interesting aging potential and ability to adapt to the diverse local terrains, and an excellent price-quality relation on the international market, particularly in the USA,” says Tollerman.

“The quality at the top-end continues to increase and compete with the best of the New World, and greater consistency is now being achieved across all price points. Apart from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon (most notably from Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza), Bonarda and Pinot Noir (from Río Negro, Patagonia) are also gaining in prestige and market share,” he says.

And if you’re looking for a great bottle of wine for under AR$50, Tollerman says there are plenty of options.

“Personally I would go with the Amalaya from Colomé, the Hess Collection winery located in Salta Province, along with the adjacent Tacuil winery— it is the world´s highest, and is a pioneer in high-altitude biodynamic winemaking,” he says. “It´s a distinctive and complex blend of principally Malbec, plus some Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Tannat.”

“Otherwise I might plump for one of the fruit-forward entry-level Malbecs or Bonardas made by Hector Durigutti — a real up-and-coming force in Argentine winemaking.”

–by Dan Colasimone<br

There are a number of well-trained expatriate masseuses who have set up shop in Buenos Aires, although they tend to charge a bit more than local practitioners. Getting a massage in Spanish is low-pressure way to great way to get a little practice and the lack of the ability to communicate can be a bonus — who wants to gab during a massage?

There is no official licensing requirement for massage in Buenos Aires or anywhere else in Argentina. This means that anyone can call themselves a ‘massage therapist,’ whether they have training or not. When making an appointment for a massage feel free to ask the provider where they studied, for how long and any other questions that might give you an idea of their level of training, or better yet go to someone who comes recommended.

Keep in mind that as in many places of the world, ‘massage’ can be used as a ‘code word’ to indicate sexual services (especially on Craigslist ads). Now that the government has banned so-called ‘Rubro 59′ ads, the sexual service ads that appear in the back section of newspapers and magazines, it is becoming harder to suss out who is a massage therapist and who just pretending to be one. Stories abound in Buenos Aires of expats who scheduled a massage only to find out that they unintentionally booked an appointment with a prostitute. Similarly, massage therapist recount stories of clients who book an appointment but make it clear when they arrive that they are looking for much more than a therapeutic massage.

<a

She works out of her Monserrat home with a studio, near downtown Buenos Aires. The earthy Brazilian gives an oil-free full-body floor massage that is more focused on the meridians than muscle groups. Those who are modest will be happy that this type of massage does not require removal of clothes, but it’s recommended to go in comfortable, loose clothes. Maybe because of her 20 years of experience, Rosy is one of those healers who seems to be able to pick up on the subtleties of whatever may be out of whack in the body, while working she may make comments such as ‘you have yearly sinus infections’ or ‘you need to cut-down your caffeine intake.’ Her intuitive powers are sought out by those suffering from conditions such as diabetes, sleep difficulties and chronic pain. You look in the phone book and the numbers listed are out of order or just plain old not answering the phone, you need to get to the airport and time is running out. When you need a taxi you need a taxi –even if it’s a Sunday and all the taxi drivers are watching the big fútbol game! So we started to collect cards of some good taxi companies when we enjoyed a pleasant ride and are listing them here, for those times when you’re caught in the rain without an umbrella, need to rush to the airport or are on a bad date and need a getaway car.

Onda Verde<br

A treatment that in other countries would go for hundreds of Euros or dollars costs hundreds of pesos in Argentina. Nonetheless, the level of doctor training and technology rivals that of any northern country.

Those who have skin problems such as Rosacea, spider veins or dark spots but never received any treatment at home because of prohibitive costs may want to consider a cosmetic visit once they see the affordable prices for these treatments in Buenos Aires.

Palermo

Silvana Dato, a doctor who practices aesthetic medicine in Las Cañitas, estimates that around 80% of Porteños from the wealthier northern neighborhoods of the city regularly receive some kind of aesthetic treatment such as laser hair removal, micro-dermoabrasion or Botox. In her office a wide range of treatments are available so that the doctor can design a course of treatments specific to each patient’s needs. Popular treatments include laser hair removal, radio frequency to stimulate collagen production and revive the skin and mesotherapy, a treatment of tiny injections of pharmaceutical and homeopathic compounds to ‘kill’ fat cells and improve the appearance of the epidermis. Mesotherapy has long been used in Europe and South America but is considered controversial in the U.S.

<a

In spite of the fact that the term ‘metrosexual’ has only recently been coined in Argentina, urban Argentine men aren’t adverse to pampering themselves, or at least getting some hair removed from their backs.

The best advertisement for Dr. Silvana Dato’s services is the doctor herself. The saucy 53 year-old says she’s never had any invasive beauty treatment such as plastic surgery. As a result, she is the personification of the concept of aging gracefully — she at once looks her age and remains gorgeous. Dato herself is shy about speaking English but her friendly staff includes young English speakers who can help translate. A bonus are the line of skincare products including a non-greasy sunblock that the doctor makes up herself.

<a

Among the treatments he offers are ‘Laser Beauty Shock’ and Thermage, ‘cellular skin cocktails’ that make frown and furrow lines less noticeable. Cellular Regeneration is a treatment program claimed to make clients feel and look ten years younger. It combines diet, exercise and natural extracts with pro-vitamin components, said to stimulate the immune system.

<a

Here the latest laser technology is used for painless hair removal, again the most popular treatment. Several sessions are required to permanently remove pesky unwanted hairs, especially for those with course, dark hair. Various promotions are on offer for a complete course of laser treatment to get rid of unwanted hairs for good. For those concerned with hair loss there’s a treatment for that too.

Those fighting the effects of aging on the body, changes from pregnancy or hardcore couch potatoes who want to pass on exercise can receive ten sessions of muscular electro-stimulation on the thighs and stomach for a total of AR$640. A facial with microdermabasion to deep clean all the grime of the city costs AR$100 per session. XY Alma is located on a block of San Telmo that may be startling to those new to the city (it sits across from a soup kitchen), but once you step inside the low lights and herbal infusions are meant to give visitors a ‘day spa’ experience.

<a

You can just pop into any of the many barbershops or salons and take your chances on a AR$25-30 haircut. When you look in the mirror and see the result—which will probably be similar to a haircut you had in 1988, just shrug your shoulders and say to yourself, ‘Well, at least I blend in with the locals.’

If, on the other hand, your hair is important to you, getting a haircut in Buenos Aires can become a personal crisis if you’re not careful. The thing is that Argentina never got the memo that mullets—you know, the ‘serious in the front — party in the back’ haircut is the brunt of jokes worldwide. These days, Argentina takes the tragedy of the mullet even one step further — one of the most popular haircuts among young people now is the ‘dreadlock mullet.’

The 'dreadlock mullet'

Another hairdresser disaster for women to be weary about is getting a dye job — you might find yourself walking out of the salon with a porn-star blond coif if you don’t seek out a trusted professional. The potentially disastrous results are only compounded if your Spanish is a bit rusty. The moral of the story is, if you don’t want to play Russian Roulette with your hair, you’ll definitely want to make an appointment with someone who comes recommended.

That being said, if you are learning Spanish, getting a haircut in Spanish is one of those things that will serve as an excellent, if nerve-racking way to get some practice.

All over—Palermo

The stylist and colorist expats, male and female, rave about in Buenos Aires is actually a Canadian named Ryan. He used to work at a salon in Caballito but is popular enough that he was able to break out on his own and now works mostly out of his Palermo studio, but can also do house calls. Some say he is truly an artist, but his popularity might make it hard to pin him down for an appointment. Ryan’s cuts start at $100, coloring can run anywhere from AR$90-400 depending on the difficulty. Tellingly, Ryan often does color corrections for $AR 200-. If you need good hair at any cost, call Ryan.

Ryan Oakley<br

They also offer a few extra services, such as massages, manicures and pedicures, and they even serve alcoholic drinks along with the usual tea and coffee. Getting a haircut here is a social occasion, and the staff are fun as well as skillful. They are also the kind of hairdressers who offer useful suggestions regarding your hairstyle, rather than just ask you what you want (which for guys who typically doesn’t have a whole bunch of ideas about what haircut he wants, is important). Here it does depend somewhat on who you end up with as your stylist.
