The brass band of the National Military College of Argentina perform for the public in the Plaza d Mayo in front of the Casa Rosada during Semana de Mayo, or May Week, leading up to celebrations of Día de la Revolución de Mayo (May Revolution Day), on the 25th of May.
The school was founded in 1869 by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on the heels of the Paraguayan War, in which the ill-prepared Argentine army lost 30,000 troops. In recent years the school expanded to include a Bachelor of Science program with training in business management and nursing. Women have also been allowed to enroll in recent years. Today women make up nearly 12% of the armed forces in Argentina.
